The New Mayor Vows a 'Fresh Chapter' for NYC in Inaugural Address
On his first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his term.
An Unprecedented Mayor
The new political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani added.
Defying advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”
Adhering to Socialist Principles
Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for worry of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.
The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.
An Ambitious Platform
Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan including:
- Universal childcare
- Free buses
- A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
- A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing Political Headwinds
The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.
Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.
The Core Tests of Governing
Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing basic services: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.
As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
